I can remember when a dual sim phone that had a real time analog TV was considered a novelty and very innovative, as the “TV out” feature was more accepted. This is not true anymore. Today, there are a few brisk selling phones that feature real time analog television. Interestingly, many of these TV phones also have full keyboards / scroll bars which is preferred by many for texting. This makes them very sought after in some circles.

Likewise, the built in digital camera on many import clones has greatly evolved. Initially, many imports got by on 1.3 mega pixel cameras. This eventually evolved to 2 mega pixels. Today, anything above 3.0 MPs is in my opinion upgraded while 5.0 MPs is the gold standard. Of those, a few have electronic telephoto lenses capable of protruding and retracting when needed or not in use.

The new C9000 camera phone is a perfect example of this. Although there is a very similar phone (called the T200) which is dual band and works in Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, the C9000 is tri band which allows use in the United States in addition to being dual sim. The 9000 is loaded with the features synonymous with the clones, like web browsing and texting (GPRS, WAP 2.0, SMS, MMS); full MP3 / MP4; an e-book reader; a 3.0 inch WQVGA TFT touch screen; built in television; FM radio, an extremely generous talk time of 460 – 500 minutes (standby of 450 – 500) and Bluetooth. You can download thousands of NES games for this phone online.

The TV on this phone has good reception and a clear picture and the speakers / sound system is sharp and crisp, but to me (and to most consumers) the real standout of this one is the camera. This is not like many camera phones that you can use in a pinch when you forget your stand alone digital camera. In fact, if you look at this phone from the front (and are not able to see the keys), you could well mistake it for a stand alone camera. This camera phone is as good as any digital camera I’ve ever owned. As a parent, this is a huge plus for me because I’m not having to lug around both a camera and a phone.

The C9000 is popular with texters too because of it’s full keyboard with real raised keys. Some folks just don’t like messaging on an iPhone type flat touch screen.

Price wise, this mobile phone is reasonable. You can occasionally get one for under $100, but you’ll more commonly pay in the low to mid $100 range. Considering a decent camera would cost this much (not to mention the MP3 / MP4 and portable television, as well as the ability to use whatever carrier you wish, you really can’t go wrong.

By: Rae Edwards

Admittedly, the shake and tilt iPhone clone market is flooded right now. With the HiPhone i32, the CECT A380, the A88 and the A8+ being very brisk sellers, you might think that there is no room for another shaking clone.

Apparently the Chinese manufacturers do not agree. That’s probably because their sales data indicates that there’s room for one more, especially a smaller model.

Though first viewed as a questionable but intriguing bonus feature, shake and tilt is now sought after and extremely popular. Consumers love not having to fumble around or scroll to change the media. It’s very convenient and quick to only have to shake the phone when you want to advance songs, wallpaper, or video. You also only have to tilt the phone when you want to go to wide screen mode.

The LH01 is the latest addition to this line of shake to the music phones, but it is different in a few ways. The most notable difference is that it is smaller, which is why people sometimes call it the “mini HiPhone.” It only measures 5.3 X 11.3 X 1.3 mm. It weighs in at only 107 grams.

This one also has the latest edition of Java (2.0) which many people feel is a huge advantage because this allows you all sorts of third party software and gaming applications, like Word, PowerPoint and Excel in terms of productivity, but there are countless others.

This little guy also has an FM radio and an upgraded camera (a 2.0 mega pixel version as opposed to the 1.3 model that many clones have.)

This knock off has all of the standard features of the other shake and tilts, including: dual sim (you can switch back and forth between them); full MP3 and MP4 players; Java 2.0; web browsing via GPRS and WAP; email and text messaging (via SMS, MMS, EMS, SMS group send, and long text SMS); handwriting recognition; an FM radio; and a web cam.

Admittedly, not everyone is going to embrace the smaller size. Some people are sticklers for the largest screen possible, but I believe there are many folks who like the idea of a small model that easily fits in pocket.

I would compare this one most to the HiPhone, as it is very similar in appearance and it enjoys the same quick, intuitive performance combined with the finger touch interface. It takes razor sharp photos and still has the loud, crisp speakers which I believe are among the best on the market.

What attracts a lot of people to this phone is its small price tag. Coming in at somewhere under $120, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

By: Rae Edwards

There’s very little debate that the iPhone clones are popular because they offer all of the features made popular by Apple at a fraction of the price. These little knock offs are always unlocked, allowing you to use which ever network or carrier you chose without being chained to AT&T. They are usually dual sim, which is really like having two phones for the price of one. And, you can remove the battery yourself with out having to run to the dealer every time the battery dies. In today’s scary economy, every little bit helps, so these things are very attractive to consumers.

But, if there was ever any draw back to the clones, it was that most models mandated you text on a finger touch screen. This works great for some people, but many are used to and prefer texting on raised keys. Luckily, there are a few models that allow this, offering clone features combined with a full keyboard and scroll bar.

Of these texting clones, the N99i (or Nokia N99i as it is sometimes called) is probably the most popular. It’s attractive, fast, user friendly, and sleek. Messaging on it is a nice, quick experience. Better yet, the manufacturers have added an analog TV and an awesome 3.0 MP camera to this phone.

There is one very popular clone with the “TV out” feature (the CECT A988). This means that you can hook the phone up to your television and watch video on the phone on a larger screen. The analog television on the N model is different because you are watching real time local television via antenna. The 988 is also not as finger friendly for messaging.

In addition to this, the Nokia N99i is a very feature rich mobile phone, which includes: a 3 inch, finger touch LCD screen and stylus; full MP3/MP4 capabilities; a very high quality 3.0 mega pixel digital camera and webcam; double Bluetooth; a voice recorder; fm radio; two sim slots; and expandable memory. You can transfer information between your computer and the phone through a USB cable. The phone does not require software and will read your GSM sim card. This one is a tri band.

This one is a very high performing model that you can usually get for under $150 if you know where to look. Considering the very high quality camera (most of the replicas have 1.3 or 2.0 mp cameras) and the analog television feature, this is very reasonable, even for a clone.

By: Rae Edwards

The term HiPhone has become synonymous with Chinese iPhone clones, almost in the same way that people use the term coke for any type of soda. Really though, the term HiPhone is more indicative of a finger touch interface which allows manipulating and editing with sliding your fingers. In essence, you use your fingers in the same way you would highlight and drag a mouse on a computer.

There have been several versions of the HiPhone including the very popular i32, the S688, the SciPhone, and now this mini version. All differ is some small way. For example, the SciPhone is quad band, while the S688 is one of the few that are single and not dual sim.

The LH01 differs in size, as it is quite a bit smaller than most of the popular knock offs. It weighs only 107 grams and measures 5.3 X 11.3 X 1.3 mm. It looks most like the i32 and has the same popular shake and tilt feature.

If you’re not familiar with shake and tilt, it’s one of the many features that make these replicas very intuitive, quick, and user friendly. When you want to advance songs or change media, you just shake the phone. No scrolling. Just shaking. When you want to change the image to wide screen mode, all you have to do is tilt it.

Another way that this mini iPhone clone is different from the i32 is that it has a stylus. There are only a few shake to the music clones with a stylus. The L01 also has updated software and added an FM radio.

I’ve found a couple people who don’t embrace this smaller size, because to them, having the largest screen possible is desirable, but for people who want a phone that can easily fit in even a small pocket, this one is a great option.

This mobile has all of the standard features you’ve come to expect from the imports, like: dual sim slots (with the ability to switch back and forth between them so that you can have two phone numbers and plans on one phone only if you want or need them); full MP3 and MP4 capabilities; web browsing, email, and texting (GPRS + WAP) plus (SMS, MMS, EMS, group send, and long text); FM radio; and a web cam.

Another way that this phone is smaller than others is its price. Averaging about $120 or less, the L series model is among the most inexpensive of the clones. In today’s economy, this cheap price, and the savings over a mandated carrier or network, really matters.

By: Rae Edwards

There’s no denying that the shake and tilt iPhone clones are a success. Consumers love being able to shake the phone to advance songs and media without having to fumble around and scroll. There’s other features to like too. The fact they are inexpensive and unlocked saves us a lot of money on phone costs and on AT&T or other expensive plans. Dual sim means that we can have two phone numbers on one phone so that we are always available.

There are many of these phones on the market right now. Examples are the HiPhone i32, the CECT A380i, A88, and the A8+.

The latest edition, the SciPhone (aka CECT i68), has all of the standard clone features, but it has added a few new ones. First, it’s thinner and smaller, which is why it’s sometimes called a “mini HiPhone.” It’s also added an E-book reader and an FM radio, but the addition that is getting the most attention is the latest version of Java.

Java enables all sorts of productivity and gaming software possibilities, including MSN, Office, and PowerPoint, to name only a few.

Now, if you can tear yourself away from the games (which is hard for me), you can read, edit, and email documents which makes this gadget a great mobile productivity tool as well.

This cell phone still has all of the smartphone specifications that you would expect, including: a generous 3.2 inch touch screen; dual sim slots; slide unlock; a 1.3 mega pixel camera which also serves as a webcam; Bluetooth 2.0; full MP3 / MP4 capabilities; web browsing, emailing and messaging via GPRS and WAP 2.0; and 2GB of memory.

Don’t let the small size of this mobile fool you. It’s super fast and it houses a slew of the latest features inside a tiny package. I love the E-book reader even though I thought I would never use it. When I am stuck waiting somewhere, it’s really easy to finally get around to reading the e-books I constantly down load but never read.

The SciPhone still has the loud Chinese speakers that we’ve been spoiled by. The 1.3 MP camera is actually pretty good. And since it starts at only about $150, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

By: Rae Edwards
