Believed to be first created in the early 1990s, photo mosaics have quickly gained popularity because of their unique and interesting visual appeal. What exactly is a photo mosaic and what makes it unique? A photo mosaic is a larger photo comprised of smaller individual photos. In another light, a photo mosaic is a photo which is divided into smaller squares. Each square is actually it’s own individual photo which closely resembles the color of which the actual rectangle once was. If this sounds kind of confusing, the best way for you to understand what a photo mosaic is would be to actually see one for yourself. Head on over to Yahoo Image Search and look up photo mosaics.

This will yield you plenty of results of which you will instanly be able to tell what a photo mosaic is. One of the original founders of photo mosaics is Robert Silvers. He patented the production of photo mosaics and also legally owns the name photomosaic. This, however, can’t legally stop the many other companies around the world which continue to make their own unique photo mosaics – a beautiful artform which nobody can really legally own.

There are a few different ways you can create your own photo mosaic if you are intrigued with them and have a little creative spirit. The first method is somewhat time consuming, but gives you the most control over the final result. Simply take your favorite photo editor and proceed to copy and paste smaller images together to make one larger image. Some software has been developed which can make this process a lot easier, which brings us to the second method. Search online for your favorite photo mosaic software – there are a handful of programs online that can help you create your own photo mosaics. While they do take some time to get used to, you should be creating your own works of art in no time at all.

I've been working on an illustrated graphic novel (the plotline and character descriptions) for about three or four years off and on..and then, I only used graphite..but now I have a 9 x 12 inch Adesso graphics tablet and I'd like to know the simplest, most effective program that would work with my tablet. Digital art as in ink and coloring scanned works..not photo-manipulation.

Thanks in advance!
